EcoNet WiFi Provisioning

Ready to Set-up the WiFi?

Provisioning the Wi-Fi

The 700 or 800 series Smart Thermostat has a built in Wi-Fi antenna and does not use the external Wi-Fi module that was used when matched with a 601 series Control Center. If a system with a current 601 series control and a Wi-Fi module is now receiving a 700 or 800 series thermostat, the Wi-Fi module will need to be removed from the EcoNet bus.

To be clear, the homeowner must participate in the provisioning of the Wi-Fi. You are helping the customer set it up, not the other way around. Do not ask for passwords or set the system up for the customer. You will need the customer there with his/her device to set up the Wi-Fi.

Before you start helping the customer set up the Wi-Fi, be sure she has the name of his/her router and the password available. It must be a 2.4 Ghz router. Many routers have dual bands which may include a 5.0 Ghz band. The EcoNet system will not recognize a 5 Ghz band.

The homeowner must first download the EcoNet app from the Google Play Store for Android devices, or the App Store for Apple Products. There are no apps for windows phones, blackberries, cranberries, flip phones, land lines or cans with string between them.

Once the homeowner downloads the app, they will see a login screen. At the bottom of the screen is a button to “Create Account”. They should press that and on the next page agree to the terms and conditions before proceeding. They can view the terms in English, Spanish or French. They will need an email address and will need to create a designated password for their EcoNet account. The rest of creating an account is pretty straight forward.

While at the Smart Thermostat press the Wi-Fi icon to begin the set up process and follow the prompts. Follow the prompts in the app as well. When the app sends the homeowner to their phone’s settings, they should go to their Wi-Fi settings and look for available networks. At this point they will select the EcoNet Wi-Fi with the MAC address. This step is where they use their device to program the Wi-Fi chip. Once they connect to the EcoNet Wi-Fi, they will need to return to the app and tell the app how to connect to their home router. They will select their router from the choices and enter the password to connect. This tells the thermostat how to connect. At this point, their phones will disconnect from the EcoNet and reconnect to their networks. No need to return to settings.

The system will connect to the EcoNet server and will prompt the homeowner to name their location with something like “Home” and enter their zip code. The Zip code is used to reach out to the weather service. Follow prompts from there to begin using the app. They may be asked to enter the contractor information if they so wish. They will also have a choice on how they wish to be contacted in the event of a system alarm. They may choose any or all. A push notification to the app, a text, and/or an email.
