Zone # Airflow Alert - Caused Shutdown

T001_Z to T006_Z ยป

Status

This is a non-critical fault and only appears in history.

Description

The system has shut down because the zoning system is configured with zone airflow limits less than the minimum airflow requirement for the system with no place to dump excess air.

When there are multiple zones, it is likely that on occasion, a demand will occur to these smaller zones with no other zones calling. You may have noticed in the zoning settings, in airflow limits that there was a flashing asteriks. This flashing is giving you a heads up durning the set up that you have limited the airflow below the system's lowest capacity and airflow.

The difference between any one zone and the system minimum airflow can be made up in several ways. It can turn to other zones through the use of overconditioning to open those dampers to make up the difference. This will be done automatically if another zone is set higher (in cooling) or lower (in heating). IF there is an intellegent bypass installed, it can also make up the difference needed to keep smaller zones from shutting down the system.

See Overconditioning and Itelligent Bypass for more information on these options.

Keep in mind, partial calls from other zones will also help. Unlike traditional zone systems, if another call develops even a slight demand, it will open that zone's damper to manage that zone's load. This may be enough, along with the zone in question to keep the system online.

Solution

You can either ignore the fault and accept that it will occur once in a while, or you can increase the airflow limit for that zone with the understanding it was set originally to reduce airflow noise. Finally you could install an Intelligent Bypass if this is a regular occurrence.

Be sure to manage expectations as well. A zoning system is a substitute for multiple systems and there are limitations. For example: you would not want a zone system cooling a Florida Room or Bonus Room above the garage and have another zone managing a wine cellar in the basement. The loads are simply too different.
